Los Angeles Clippers Team Report - November 9 11.9.2004
|
(Basketball News) - The Los Angeles Clippers found themselves on the wrong end of a 99-96 double-overtime decision against the defending champion Detroit Pistons at the Staples Center.
Corey Maggette netted 25 points and established a career-best with 19 boards, but his desperation three at the buzzer in the second overtime went awry. Chris Wilcox added 24 points, including seven down the stretch in regulation to keep the Clippers close. Elton Brand, playing through an injured finger, chipped in 21 with four blocked shots.
Detroit’s Chauncey Billups opened the second extra frame with a three, but the Clippers netted the next seven points for a 96-92 lead midway through.
The Pistons then put the clamps down with their trademark defense and eventually tied the game from the foul line, as Billups hit a pair with 34 seconds to go to give his team a 97-96 edge.
Los Angeles struggled to find a shot the next time up the court and Marko Jaric was forced into a bad attempt with 11 seconds to play. Billups was then fouled immediately and hit both shots from the charity stripe, but the best the Clippers could do with limited time was a hurried three by Maggette that went off the back of the rim.
Detroit scored the last seven points of the night.
The Clippers turned the ball over 27 times, resulting in 30 Detroit points.
LA returns to action on Wednesday when they kick off a three-game road trip against the Indiana Pacers.
