Mavericks acquire Dampier from Golden State

08.24.2004

Dallas, TX (Basketball News) - The Dallas Mavericks have acquired centers Erick Dampier and Evan Eschmeyer, guard Dan Dickau, and the draft rights to Steve Logan in a trade with the Golden State Warriors.

In exchange, the Mavericks sent forwards Christian Laettner and Eduardo Najera, two future first round picks, the draft rights to guards Luis Flores and Mladen Sekularac along with cash considerations to the Warriors.

Dampier, 6’11", 265 pounds, is coming off the best season of his eight-year career with averages of 12.3 points and 12.0 rebounds in 74 games for the Warriors. He was one of just nine players to average a point-rebound double- double last season. The Indiana Pacers selected Dampier with the 10th overall pick in the 1996 draft. After one season with the Pacers, he was traded to Golden State in a deal that sent current Warriors general manager Chris Mullin to the Pacers.

Eschmeyer, also 6’11", 250 pounds, played two seasons for the Mavericks before sitting out all of the 2003-04 campaign with a knee injury. He was traded to the Warriors along with Nick Van Exel, Avery Johnson, Popeye Jones and Antoine Rigaudeau in exchange for Antawn Jamison, Chris Mills, Danny Fortson and Jiri Welsch one year ago, but never played for Golden State. In 153 career games, he has averaged 2.8 points and 3.9 rebounds in 14.0 minutes per game.

Dickau, 6’0", 190, has been traded for the second time this offseason. On July 20th, he was acquired from Portland along with Dale Davis in exchange for Van Exel. Dickau spent his first season and a half with Atlanta before being traded to Portland along with Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Theo Ratliff in exchange for Rasheed Wallace and Wesley Person in the middle of last season.

In 93 career games, Dickau has averaged 3.0 points and 1.3 assists in 8.7 minutes per game. He was the 28th overall pick in the 2002 draft.

Logan was the 30th overall pick by Golden State in the 2002 draft.

Najera, 6’8", 235, played four seasons in Dallas. He has averaged 4.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 17.4 minutes in 208 career games. Knee problems limited Najera to 58 games in 2003-04 with averages of 3.0 points and 2.7 rebounds in 12.4 minutes per game.

Laettner, 6’11", 245 was acquired from Washington in a draft day deal by Dallas along with Jerry Stackhouse and the rights to Devin Harris in exchange for Jamison and cash considerations. The 12-year veteran from Duke has averaged 13.3 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 819 career games and was an All-Star in 1996-97. Last season, Laettner appeared in 48 games and averaged 5.9 points and 4.8 rebounds.

Flores was the 55th overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft by Houston but was acquired by Dallas in a trade.

Sekularac was a second round pick (55th overall) of the Mavericks in the 2002 NBA Draft.
