Mavs beat Sonics; Nowitzki, Lewis injured 12.21.2006

Nowitzki and Seattle forward Rashard Lewis were both hurt in Wednesday’s game. Nowitzki was helped off the court in the first quarter with a sprained left ankle after Seattle’s Chris Wilcox fell into him going for a rebound. Lewis left earlier with an injured tendon in his right hand after getting his hand caught in the net while trying to block a shot from Dampier.
X-rays on both players were negative.
Jason Terry tallied 17 points and Josh Howard scored 15 for Dallas, which won its fifth straight and beat the Sonics for a seventh consecutive time.
Luke Ridnour had 21 points and nine assists before fouling out for Seattle, which has lost six in a row.
The Mavericks were behind by double digits most of the second quarter and trailed 56-45 at the half. However, trailing 64-52 in the third, the Mavs scored 12 in a row to tie the contest. Devin Harris’ driving layup equaled the score at 64 with under five minutes left in the quarter.
Howard’s three-pointer in the final seconds gave Dallas a 73-70 lead before Ridnour’s hook shot had Seattle within one going into the fourth.
Earl Watson’s three-pointer tied the game for Seattle at 85 with 6:14 left, but the Mavs scored the next 10 to pull away for good. Terry, Dampier and Harris each hit two free throws and Devean George’s jam made it 93-85. Howard’s jumper capped the burst with 3:02 remaining.
Harris and George ended with 13 points for Dallas.
Wilcox had 18 points and nine boards, while Watson also had 18 points for the Sonics.
Seattle led by seven after the opening quarter and stretched that margin to 56-45 at the half.
