Sixers slide past Hornets

01.23.2007

Philadelphia, PA (Basketball News) - Kyle Korver scored a game-high 25 points and Andre Miller contributed 17 points and dished out 11 assists as the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets, 102-96, at the Wachovia Center.

Andre Iguodala chipped in with 20 points and six assists for Philadelphia, which won for just the second time in six games and third in its last 11. Rodney Carney donated 13 points and five rebounds, while Samuel Dalembert added 10 points and seven boards.

Devin Brown paced the Hornets with 24 points, while David West had a double- double with 23 points and 11 rebounds in a losing cause. Desmond Mason was the final player in double figures, chipping in 17 points for New Orleans/Oklahoma City, which has lost two of three.

A short jumper by Dalembert keyed a 13-4 Sixers run in the middle of the first quarter, as Philadelphia led 23-16 with 2:06 remaining. The hot shooting continued through the end of the stanza, as the Sixers established a 30-21 edge heading into the second quarter.

The Hornets made just three shots over the next eight minutes, as Philadelphia opened a 49-30 margin, capped by a pair of Iguodala free throws.

West answered with back-to-back layups for the Hornets, but a driving dunk and a jump shot by Miller expanded the lead for the Sixers.

Mason then ended the half with a reverse layup and a free throw for the Hornets, but Philadelphia carried a 54-40 lead into the break.

The Hornets started strong in the second half, closing within eight, 59-51, on a three-point play by Brown, who dropped a running jumper and followed with a shot from the charity stripe. The Sixers, however, continued to pull away and held an 11-point edge heading into the final stanza.

The visiting team got within five down the stretch, well after it seemed Philadelphia had put the game away. Jannero Pargo’s running jumper made it 98-93 with just 24 seconds to play, but Korver responded with a pair of free throws for the Sixers to widen the margin to seven.

West’s trey made it 100-96, but there were just seven seconds remaining, with the Hornets in need of two more possessions. Korver then iced it for the Sixers, hitting two final free throws with six ticks to play.
