Smith lead Hawks past Sixers

03.13.2007

Atlanta, GA (Basketball News) - Josh Smith scored 26 points and cleared a career-high 17 boards as Atlanta trounced Philadelphia, 104-92, snapping the Sixers’ seven-game winning streak.

Josh Childress and Zaza Pachulia each had 15 points, and Pachulia added 10 rebounds for the Hawks, who have won their last four games following a six- game slide. Marvin Williams chipped in with 14 points, while Anthony Johnson and Tyronn Lue added 10 apiece.

Andre Iguodala had a team-high 18 points for Philadelphia, which was riding its longest winning streak in four years. Rodney Carney donated 15 points off the bench, while Kyle Korver and Louis Williams added 13 apiece. Andre Miller also scored 10 points for the Sixers.

Atlanta opened the game on a 13-4 run, ignited by a jump shot from Johnson, followed by a Smith layup and three consecutive baskets — two jumpers sandwiching a long three — from Williams. Smith capped the stretch with a dunk at 7:44.

The Sixers momentarily stopped the bleeding on back-to-back jumpers from Samuel Dalembert and Iguodala, but the Atlanta lead quickly grew to 20-8 on Childress’ driving layup at 5:26.

Philadelphia rallied and trailed by nine, 31-22, at the end of the first quarter.

The Hawks outscored the Sixers 27-21 in the second frame — with the lead ballooning to 15 on a pair of Childress free throws at 5:12 — and eventually carried a 58-43 lead into the break.

A persistent Atlanta offense continued to dominate in the third, and the Hawks led 79-50 following a 19-3 burst, capped by a Smith layup at 3:50.

Atlanta closed out the third on a 6-2 run and led 86-64 heading to the fourth quarter.

The Sixers showed signs of life down the stretch, but only managed to close the gap to 12 with under 20 seconds remaining in the contest.
