Struggling Grizzlies head to Atlanta

03.9.2007

(Basketball News) - The Memphis Grizzlies will try and stop a five-game losing streak when they visit the Atlanta Hawks tonight at Philips Arena.

Memphis is 0-1 on a three-game road trip and dropped a 94-87 decision to the Toronto Raptors in Wednesday’s opener of the trek. Mike Miller scored 19 points and Rudy Gay had 17 and a career-high 11 boards for Memphis, which will also visit Charlotte on the trek and is an NBA-worst 4-27 on the road this season. Pau Gasol compiled 16 points in the loss.

The Grizzlies are still last in the Southwest Division, and reside in the basement of the Western Conference standings.

On the injury front for Memphis, guard Tarence Kinsey (leg) is questionable for Friday’s game and guard Chucky Atkins (ankle) is listed as doubtful against Atlanta.

The Hawks put the brakes on a six-game losing streak with Wednesday’s 100-97 victory over the Washington Wizards in the opener of a four-game homestand at Philips Arena.

Zaza Pachulia scored a career-high 27 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Hawks, who played without Joe Johnson due to a calf injury and Marvin Williams because of a back ailment. Anthony Johnson stepped up with 19 points, while Josh Smith and Salim Stoudamire tallied 13 points each for Atlanta.

Johnson is out indefinitely, while Williams and guard Speedy Claxton (knees) are both questionable against Memphis.

Atlanta, which is 5 1/2 games off the eighth and final playoff spot in the East, will also host Minnesota and Philadelphia on the stand. It is 11-18 at Philips Arena this season.

Friday’s showdown between Memphis and Atlanta is the second and final meeting of the season. The Hawks won the first matchup, 97-88, on December 15 at FedExForum. Pachulia scored 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds and Claxton posted 19 points and dished out 11 assists to lead Atlanta.

Memphis has won six of the last seven meetings and is unbeaten in its last three trips to Atlanta.
