Warriors, head coach Montgomery part ways

Montgomery has been the Warriors head coach for the past two seasons and posted an overall mark of 68-96 after finishing consecutive seasons with a record of 34-48.

"I’m very appreciative of the opportunity that I was presented two years ago," said Montgomery. "This was a new challenge that I was eager to embrace and glad that I had the chance to pursue and experience.

"I’d like to thank the Warriors’ organization for their support, professionalism and class, and I’d also like to thank the fans of the Bay Area. This is a tremendous region for basketball and the support that they have provided me over the years has been simply outstanding."

In addition, it appears the Warriors have already found Montgomery’s replacement.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported on Tuesday that Golden State will name Don Nelson its new head coach on Wednesday night. The Warriors have scheduled a press conference for 10 p.m. (et).

It would mark Nelson’s second coaching tenure with the Warriors. He guided the team for six-plus seasons beginning in 1988 and posted a 277-260 record. Nelson resigned halfway through the 1994-95 season.

Montgomery took over as Golden State’s head coach on May 21, 2004. Prior to his two-year tenure in California, the 59-year-old Montgomery spent 18 years at Stanford University. He led the Cardinals to 16 NCAA post-season appearances and a trip to the Final Four in 1998.

"This is a very difficult day for me," said Warriors vice president Chris Mullin. "Mike is a terrific basketball coach who has enjoyed a great deal of success throughout his career."

Mullin added, "Based on this agreement, we will now focus our efforts in a different direction and do what we think is in the best interest for this team. We thank Mike for his contributions and certainly wish him well."
