Warriors sign Derek Fisher

Fisher had spent his first eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and was a key contributor to the Los Angeles team that won three straight NBA titles beginning in 1999-2000.

The move to sign Fisher was an interesting one considering Golden State’s depth at the point guard position. The Warriors inked Speedy Claxton to a multi-year contract and traded for Nick Van Exel last summer.

Fisher had also given consideration to playing with Miami, Houston and Seattle as well as re-signing with the Lakers.

"We feel very fortunate to add a player and person the caliber of Derek Fisher to our team," said executive vice president of operations Chris Mullin. "The fact that he chose the Warriors over several other attractive suitors is certainly a good feeling."

The 29-year-old Fisher averaged only 7.1 points and 2.3 assists per game last season while primarily serving as a backup to future Hall-of-Fame point guard Gary Payton.

Fisher was still able to provide a spark off the bench and hit one of the biggest shots of the season when he drained a dramatic buzzer-beating fadeaway in Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals against San Antonio. The basket lifted the Lakers to victory in the critical game and they went on to win the series before eventually making it all the way to the NBA Finals, only to lose to Detroit.

For his career, Fisher has totaled 7.4 points and 3.0 assists per game. His best season came in 2000-01 when he posted 11.5 points and 4.4 assists per contest.

The Arkansas-Little Rock product was chosen by LA with the 24th pick in the 1996 draft.
