San Antonio is the third seed in the Western Conference, while Denver is No. 6. The Spurs will have home-court advantage in the best-of-seven series.
There is some playoff history between the Spurs and Nuggets. San Antonio beat the Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs in 1990, 1995 and 2005 and in the conference semis in 1983. Denver defeated the Spurs in the opening round in 1985.
The Spurs are 2-0 against the Nuggets this season and have captured four of the last six contests in the series. Denver has dropped two of its last three at San Antonio.
San Antonio enters tonight’s contest on a two-game losing streak. On Monday, Pau Gasol poured in 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the Memphis Grizzlies defeated the Spurs, 101-91, at the FedExForum.
Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili all rested for the Spurs against Memphis. James White and Michael Finley both finished with 17 points for the Spurs, who have dropped two straight after a six-game winning streak.
Veteran guard Brent Barry (stomach virus) is doubtful for tonight’s contest. Barry is averaging 8.5 points in 74 games this season for San Antonio.
The Spurs are an impressive 31-9 at home this season. They will be appearing in the playoffs for the 10th straight year.
Denver has played its best basketball this season in April. The Nuggets are 9-1 this month and hope to continue their excellent play in the postseason.
All-Star Allen Iverson scored 25 points to lead the Nuggets to a 122-107 victory over the disappointing Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday at the Pepsi Center.
Linas Kleiza posted 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Nuggets, who finished 23-18 at home this season. Carmelo Anthony scored 21 points, and Nene collected 18 points and 10 boards in the victory.
The Nuggets are a respectable 21-19 on the road this season, and have qualified for the postseason for the fourth straight year.
