Portland tries to blaze Warriors

On Wednesday, forward Zach Randolph scored 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Trail Blazers to a 110-106 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics at KeyArena.

Rookie Brandon Roy netted 20 on 10-of-16 shooting from the floor in a homecoming game. Roy attended the University of Washington, and played high school basketball at Seattle’s Garfield High.

Starting point guard Jarrett Jack finished with 13 points, six rebounds and six assists in Wednesday’s victory for Portland, while Juan Dixon came off the bench and scored 18 in 23 minutes of action.

Portland, which was a league-worst 6-35 on the road last season, returns to the Rose Garden on Saturday for its home-opener against Kevin Garnett and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Warriors will try and bounce back from a season-opening loss. Ronny Turiaf led all scorers with a career-high 23 points, 14 of which came in the third quarter as the Los Angeles Lakers toppled Golden State, 110-98, on Wednesday at The Arena.

Monta Ellis scored 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor in the loss to the Lakers for the Warriors, who dropped to 7-14 in season-openers at home. Baron Davis had 18 points, but shot just 6-of-19 from the field. Jason Richardson netted 15 and Troy Murphy pulled down 13 boards in defeat.

Wednesday’s game marked the first contest under new head coach Don Nelson, who has returned to the Warriors bench for a second stint. Nelson coached the Warriors from 1988-95 and ranks second on their all-time wins list with 277. Nelson guided the squad to the playoffs in four of his seven seasons, including their last playoff berth in 1994.

The 66-year-old Nelson took over for Mike Montgomery, who parted ways during the offseason with the Warriors despite still having two years left on a four- year contract.

After tonight’s game, Golden State hits the road for a three-game trip. The Warriors will visit Utah on Saturday, Dallas on Monday and the Hornets on Tuesday in the first of a home-and-home set.

Last season, the Warriors swept all four meetings with Portland. The Trail Blazers have lost three straight after winning their last two at Golden State.
