Shaq out 4-6 weeks with knee injury

11.17.2006

Miami, FL (Basketball News) - The defending NBA champion Miami Heat will have to do without All-Star center Shaquille O’Neal for the next 4-to-6 weeks due to cartilage damage in his left knee.

O’Neal has a flap tear in the articular cartilage of his knee, which he suffered in Sunday’s game against Houston. Dr. Harlan Selesnick will perform surgery on O’Neal.

O’Neal sat out two games earlier in the season with a bruised knee, which he reinjured after a collision with Houston’s Chuck Hayes in Sunday’s 94-72 loss.

A 13-time All-Star, O’Neal has averaged 14 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists and one block in four games this season. He has posted 24,820 career points in 14 seasons for 14th place in NBA history.

Also, Miami guard Jason Williams was active in Friday’s 100-76 loss to New York for the first time this season, after having undergone arthroscopic knee surgery on July 21st.
