Spurs take on Mavs in big West battle

(Basketball News) - The two teams with the best records in the Western Conference square off tonight, as the San Antonio Spurs host the Dallas Mavericks at the AT&T Center.

San Antonio leads the Mavericks by two games for first place in the Southwest Division and the top spot in the West. Dallas is the fourth seed in the conference playoff race.

This is the fourth and final meeting of the regular season between the clubs. The teams split a pair of games at Dallas, while the Spurs beat the Mavericks, 98-89, on March 2nd at the AT&T Center.

Dallas has lost four straight after winning its last two at San Antonio, which has won two straight and six of the last eight contests in this series.

San Antonio, which plays the second of a five-game homestand, attempts to rebound from a surprising loss at home. On Wednesday, Mike Bibby turned in a stellar all-around game with 31 points, seven rebounds and eight assists to lead the Sacramento Kings to a 97-87 win over the Spurs.

Tony Parker paced San Antonio with 16 points and five assists in the loss to Sacramento. Tim Duncan finished with 11 points and six rebounds for the Spurs, who are still 10-3 in their last 13 outings.

The Spurs are an impressive 31-5 at home this season. They will also play Memphis, Seattle and Orlando on the current homestand.

Dallas will try and win its third straight game this evening. Dirk Nowitzki ended with 29 points as the Mavericks shot a sizzling 61.3 percent from the field and downed Sacramento, 127-101, on Tuesday at the American Airlines Center.

Josh Howard scored 23 points during Tuesday’s victory for the Mavericks, who won their second straight contest and posted a season-high for points in a game this season. Jason Terry netted 18, while Josh Powell posted a career- high 12 points in the victory

The Mavericks are a solid 24-13 on the road this season. They have dropped three in a row as the visitor.
