Warriors try to win in Utah

01.13.2004

Salt Lake City, UT (Basketball News) - The Utah Jazz hope to continue their dominance at home against Golden State tonight as they welcome the Warriors to the Delta Center for a Western Conference matchup.

Earlier this season, Golden State, which has lost 17 straight at Utah, defeated the Jazz, 95-89, on November 7 at The Arena. The Warriors last win at Utah came on November 11, 1994.

On Saturday, the Jazz picked up a 92-71 win over the Atlanta Hawks in front of their home crowd.

Utah head coach Jerry Sloan returned to the sideline following a brief absence on Friday night to be with his ailing wife. Sloan’s wife, Bobbye, is undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer, but the longest tenured coach in the NBA has stated he will not resign.

DeShawn Stevenson scored 17 points, while Carlos Arroyo added 14 points in the win for the Jazz, who have won 10 straight home games over Atlanta. Utah’s Andrei Kirilenko and Aleksandar Pavlovic each finished with 12 points in the victory.

Utah will be without forward Matt Harpring, who leads the Jazz in scoring and rebounding. Harpring needs knee surgery that will likely keep him out of action for the rest of the season.

Harpring will undergo arthroscopic surgery once the swelling in his knee subsides. The procedure will repair a cartilage tear that has sidelined him since January 2.

The Jazz, who have won four straight at home, are 15-3 as the host this season.

Golden State fell in overtime for the second straight game on Monday. The Warriors were outlasted by the Memphis Grizzlies, 115-113, in double-overtime at the Arena.

Nick Van Exel had 23 points, but shot just 9-of-25 from the floor in the loss for Golden State, which beat Seattle, 113-110, in overtime on Sunday.

Erick Dampier finished with 23 points and 22 rebounds for Golden State — the second 20-20 game of his career. He added seven blocks for the Warriors, who squandered a 10-point second-half lead to lose for the eighth time in nine games.

The Warriors, who have lost eight in a row on the road, are 4-14 as the visitor this season. Golden State’s last win on the road came on December 17, 2003 at Atlanta.

The home team has won the last five meetings in this series. Golden State has won two straight and three of the last four contests with the Jazz.
