"We fully expected Vince to exercise his option," said Nets president Rod Thorn. "We have stated publicly that we would like to bring him back, and will now work towards that goal."
Carter, who is scheduled to become a free agent on Sunday, is expected to remain with the Nets.
According to The Record newspaper in New Jersey, the Nets will likely offer Carter a guaranteed four-year contract with a partial guarantee for a fifth year. The total guaranteed money for the new deal would be $65 million.
Carter led the Nets in scoring last season, averaging 25.2 points per game. He also averaged six rebounds and 4.8 assists per contest. In 12 playoff games, Carter netted 22.3 points per game.
