Nets’ Rogers declines to exercise player option

07.1.2004

East Rutherford, NJ (Basketball News) - The New Jersey Nets announced Thursday that Rodney Rogers has declined to exercise the player option on the final year of his contract, making the veteran forward an unrestricted free agent.

Rogers, who has spent the past two seasons with New Jersey, started 15 games for the team this past year. He averaged 7.8 points and 4.4 rebounds in 69 contests.

"Rodney is a wonderful guy who was a key component of our team," said Nets CEO Rod Thorn. "We wish him well in his career."

A first-round draft pick (9th overall) of Denver in 1993, the 31-year-old Rogers appeared in 31 playoff games with the Nets. He averaged 6.5 points and 3.6 rebounds in those contests.

In 808 career regular season games with five teams, he has posted averages of 11.2 points and 4.5 rebounds.
