(Basketball News) - The New York Knicks overcame a 20-point deficit but eventually succumbed to the Dallas Mavericks, 127-121, in overtime on Monday at Madison Square Garden.
Stephon Marbury poured in a game-high 38 points with 14 assists, but New York fell to 1-3 since acquiring him in a trade with Phoenix.
Allan Houston added 29 points for the Knicks, including a three-pointer with 5.9 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game. Another component of the Phoenix trade, Anfernee Hardaway, scored 19 for New York, which lost for the fifth time in six games.
New York trailed by as many as 20 points in the third quarter, but rallied with a strong fourth. The Knicks scored six points in a five-second span at the end of the game to send it into overtime.
Dallas scored first in overtime, however, taking the lead for good on Dirk Nowitzki’s free throws that made it 117-115 just 20 seconds in. The Knicks were within 121-119 at the 1:00 mark, but the Mavericks used a 6-0 run, capped by Nowitzki’s foul shots in the waning moments, to seal it.
New York played without Keith Van Horn, who is out with a hyperextended knee. Van Horn could play on Wednesday when the Knicks host the Orlando Magic.
