Nuggets, Spurs square off at San Antonio

01.22.2006

(Basketball News) - The streaking San Antonio Spurs play the first of a brief two-game homestand when they welcome the surging Denver Nuggets this afternoon to the AT&T Center.

This is the third of four meetings between the clubs this season. The Spurs won the two previous contests, as it won on November 1st at San Antonio and on December 31st at the Pepsi Center.

The Spurs have won seven of the last nine meetings in this series. Denver has lost nine of its last 10 meetings at San Antonio.

San Antonio goes for its fifth straight win today. On Friday, Tony Parker poured in a career-high 38 points, picking up the scoring slack after star guard Manu Ginobili left with an ankle injury, as the Spurs defeated the Miami Heat, 101-94, at AmericanAirlines Arena.

Ginobili scored eight points and dished out five assists before coming down awkwardly on his right ankle at 8:59 of the third quarter with the Spurs firmly in front, 58-45. The guard was carried off the court and taken into the locker room where he was diagnosed with a sprained ankle after x-rays were negative.

Tim Duncan posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds and Bruce Bowen tallied 10 points for the Spurs, who have won 10 of their last 12 games overall.

Ginobili, who is averaging 15.4 points per game, is questionable for today’s contest.

The Spurs, who will host the Charlotte Bobcats on Tuesday, are an impressive 19-2 as the host this season.

The Nuggets have also won four straight games. Carmelo Anthony poured in a game-high 31 points on 11-of-22 shooting from the floor as Denver dominated the Utah Jazz, 113-83, on Friday at the Pepsi Center.

Kenyon Martin added 16 points with six rebounds in the win over the Jazz for Denver, which has won six of its last seven games overall. Andre Miller finished with 13 points and five assists, while Earl Watson contributed eight points and nine assists in the victory.

Denver is 8-11 on the road this season. The Nuggets have won two in a row as the visitor.
