Spurs ready to rebound

02.21.2006

(Basketball News) - The defending world champion San Antonio Spurs own an impressive 40-12 record, but they find themselves in second place in the Southwest Division, just one game behind the Dallas Mavericks (41-11).

San Antonio tries to halt a two-game losing streak on Tuesday, as they welcome the Seattle SuperSonics to the AT&T Center in both teams first game since the All-Star break. The Spurs have won two in a row and nine of the last 11 contests in this series. Seattle has lost four of its last five at San Antonio.

It is the first meeting of the season between San Antonio and the SuperSonics. The last time these teams met was in last year’s playoffs, as the Spurs knocked off Seattle in six games in the Western Conference semifinals.

The Spurs return home after going 6-2 on an eight-game road trip. In their last game on the swing, All-Star Allen Iverson scored 42 points, including two pivotal buckets in overtime, as the Philadelphia 76ers fought past the Spurs, 103-100, last Wednesday at the Wachovia Center.

Tony Parker ended with a team-high 23 points in the loss to the Sixers for San Antonio, while Nazr Mohammed totaled 18 points and 20 boards for the Spurs, who dropped the last two games on the road trip. Tim Duncan also had a double- double with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

San Antonio is an impressive 21-3 as the host this season. It has won two straight at home. The Spurs are scheduled to visit Paul Gasol and the Grizzlies on Friday and will return home on Saturday to host Jason Richardson and the Warriors on Saturday in the first of a four-game homestand.

Duncan leads the Spurs in scoring (19.5 ppg) and rebounding (11.5 rpg), while Parker is averaging a team-best 5.8 assists per game.

The Spurs are 16-2 when they score 100 or more points this season.

San Antonio is scheduled to play 17 of its final 30 games this season at home.
