Spurs try to continue dominance of Celtics

03.17.2007

(Basketball News) - The San Antonio Spurs will try and bounce back from having their lengthy winning streak halted, and will do so against a team they have had great success against, when they host the Boston Celtics this evening at the AT&T Center.

The Spurs had a 13-game winning streak brought to an end on Thursday when they were bested by the Milwaukee Bucks, 101-90. However, they put an 18-game winning streak against Boston on the line tonight.

San Antonio hasn’t lost to Boston since January of 1997, and haven’t fell at home in the series since February 14, 1990, a span of 15 games. Overall, the Spurs have won 24 of the their last 25 matchups with the Celtics.

Brent Barry scored 20 points for the Spurs on Thursday against the Bucks, while Tony Parker contributed 15 points and eight assists. Tim Duncan added 13 points and 13 boards for San Antonio.

Despite the Spurs’ winning run, the club is still 7 1/2 games behind Dallas, which has already clinched a playoff spot, in the Southwest Division. San Antonio currently stands third overall in the Western Conference.

The Spurs kick off a three-game homestand tonight and are 22-8 at home this season. San Antonio will also welcome Indiana and Detroit over the next week.

Boston fell in defeat for the third time in four games on Friday when it was bested by the Mavericks, 106-101. Paul Pierce had 29 points and eight assists in the loss.

Gerald Green finished with a career-high 25 points and Al Jefferson totaled 20 points and 10 rebounds for Boston, which blew a 12-point lead in the third quarter in the opener of a three-game road swing.

The Celtics are 10-23 as the visitor this season and will close out the trip against the Hornets on Monday.
