Timberwolves open homestand against Cavs

02.8.2006

(Basketball News) - The Minnesota Timberwolves begin a five-game homestand tonight when they welcome the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Target Center.

This is the second and final meeting of the campaign between the clubs. On November 26th, Kevin Garnett scored 26 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, as the Timberwolves defeated the Cavaliers, 89-85, at Quicken Loans Arena.

The Timberwolves have won two straight and six of the last seven meetings in this series. Cleveland has lost three straight and five of its last six at Minnesota.

Minnesota returns home after going 1-3 on a four-game road trip. Garnett’s last-second block of Shawn Marion’s floater preserved a 103-101 victory for the Timberwolves over the Phoenix Suns on Monday at U.S. Airways Center.

Garnett netted 19, including the Timberwolves’ last five points, and also grabbed 12 rebounds and Marcus Banks finished with 19 points for Minnesota, which snapped a three-game losing streak.

Minnesota, which has still lost seven of its last 10 contests overall, is 14-8 as the host this season. The Timberwolves have won six of their last eight games at the Target Center.

The Cavaliers play the first of a brief two-game road trip tonight. On Monday, LeBron James’ driving layup with 18.1 seconds left helped the Cleveland Cavaliers hold on for an 89-86 win over the Milwaukee Bucks at Quicken Loans Arena.

James finished with 22 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds in the win over the Bucks for Cleveland, which blew a 10-point lead with under four minutes remaining, but rallied to win for the eighth time in 10 games.

Drew Gooden and Aleksandar Pavlovic ended with 15 points apiece in the win over Milwaukee for the Cavaliers, who scored just four points in the final 3:58.

Cleveland, which will visit the Washington Wizards on Friday at the MCI Center, is 10-13 on the road this season.
