The 47-year-old Cartwright was fired by the Bulls last November after the team got off to a 4-10 start. The former All-Star center compiled an overall record of 51-100 in parts of three seasons as Chicago’s head coach.
Cartwright also spent six years as an assistant with the Bulls before being named head coach on December 28, 2001.
"Bill brings a wealth of experience to our coaching staff," said Nets’ CEO Rod Thorn. "His knowledge of the game, gained from playing and coaching, will be an invaluable asset to Coach (Lawrence) Frank and the Nets players."
Cartwright played 15 NBA seasons with the New York Knicks and Chicago and averaged 13.2 points and 6.3 rebounds for his career. A first-round pick by the Knicks in 1979, Cartwright was a member of three World Championship squads in Chicago.
