Nets sign free agent Jay Williams

09.28.2006

East Rutherford, NJ (Basketball News) - The New Jersey Nets have signed free agent guard Jay Williams, team president Rod Thorn announced Thursday. Terms of the deal were not released.

Williams was originally selected by the Chicago Bulls as the second overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft. During his rookie campaign he averaged 9.5 points, 4.7 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.15 steals in 75 games during the 2002-2003 season and was named to the NBA’s All-Rookie second team.

Following the season, Williams was involved in a motorcycle accident, in which he sustained a fractured pelvis and three torn knee ligaments in addition to severing a main nerve in his leg. He has not appeared in an NBA game since that time.

The 6-foot-2 Williams played three seasons at Duke (’00-’02) and helped lead the Blue Devils to the NCAA men’s basketball championship in 2001.
