Pacers and Mavericks swap point guards

Johnson, 31, has spent the past three years with the Pacers and averaged 9.2 points with 4.3 assists in 75 games this past season. He was at his best in the first round of the playoffs, producing 20.0 points and 5.2 assists in a six-game loss to the New Jersey Nets.

"We are excited to add Anthony Johnson to our team," said Mavericks head coach Avery Johnson. "We were looking for a true point guard with some size and he fits those needs. We are disappointed to lose Darrell and the two young prospects, but we wish them well and thank them for their contributions."

Armstrong, 38, appeared in 62 games this past season for Dallas, averaging a mere 2.1 points and 1.4 assists in a limited role due to a torn rotator cuff. The 12-year NBA veteran has also played for Orlando and New Orleans.

"A lot has happened with that team since Reggie [Miller] left," Armstrong said. "I think they need that veteran leadership. My locker room presence and my spirit is something that they can use. I know how to keep guys loose. They have a chance to be better. They have some guys there that can play."

Powell played in 37 games for the Mavericks last season, his first in the NBA. He averaged 3.0 points and 2.2 rebounds. Marshall posted 3.1 points and 1.3 rebounds in 23 games, including nine starts, during his rookie season with the Pacers.

"Darrell Armstrong is a good fit, a solid professional, a great guy in the locker room and someone who brings a lot of energy to a team," said Pacers president of basketball operations Larry Bird. "Both Powell and Marshall are young and talented players who possibly can help us and we’re excited to take a look at them. Their experience with a championship-caliber team like Dallas last season gives them the mentality of what it takes to win at the highest level."

This was the second trade involving the teams this month, as Dallas sent guard Marquis Daniels to Indiana in exchange for forward Austin Croshere.
