Rose, whose streak of 286 consecutive games played was second best in the NBA, will miss an indefinite period of time, the team said.
Rose broke the fourth metacarpal bone in his left hand during the first quarter of Sunday’s overtime win against Golden State when he collided with the Warriors’ Clifford Robinson.
Despite the obvious discomfort, the 31-year-old Rose remained in the game and scored 19 points.
Rose, who was obtained from the Chicago Bulls on December 1, is averaging 14.4 points and 4.7 assists per contest this year. For his career, which also includes stints with Denver and Indiana, Rose has posted averages of 14.4 points, 4.2 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game.
