"After receiving a second opinion on Antonio’s lingering back problems, it is very unlikely that he would return to competitive action this season with the Raptors," said team president and general manager Bryan Colangelo. "After lengthy discussions with Antonio regarding his physical condition and his general sense of disappointment over his personally difficult year, we have concluded that it’s in the best interest of both the organization and Antonio Davis to simply release him at this late point of the season."
Davis was traded from New York to Toronto on February 3 but played just eight games for the Raptors this season after sustaining the injury on February 27 against Chicago.
The Texas-El Paso alum played for Toronto from 1999-04 as well, and is the franchise’s all-time leading rebounder (2,839). Davis averaged 10 points and 7.5 rebounds over his 13-year career with Indiana, Toronto, Chicago and New York.
