Sixers bring back Malone as assistant coach

09.28.2006

Philadelphia, PA (Basketball News) - The Philadelphia 76ers named Moses Malone an assistant coach on Thursday.

Malone is a former Sixers player, a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and a three-time NBA MVP. He is expected to work primarily with the team’s big men, after spending time as a team consultant last season.

Selected to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1997, Malone averaged 20.6 points and 12.2 rebounds in his NBA career and 22.1 points and 13.8 rebounds per game in the postseason. A 12-time NBA All-Star and six-time All- NBA selection, Malone still owns the league record for most career offensive rebounds (6,731). He ranks fifth in both points (27,409) and total rebounds (16,212).

The Sixers also announced that Jim Lynam has been added as an assistant coach. A veteran of more than 20 years in the NBA coaching ranks, Lynam returns to the 76ers staff after spending four-plus seasons as head coach of the team from 1987-92 and two years as general manager from 1992-94.

Lynam originally re-joined the team prior to the 2005-06 season as an assistant coach, but had to leave the team late in the preseason due to health reasons.
