According to team president Billy King, Hunter is expected to sign with the club on Friday.
The move for Hunter comes just two days after the 76ers traded forward Marc Jackson and an undisclosed amount of cash to the New Jersey Nets in exchange for a conditional second round selection in the 2006 NBA Draft in the hopes of clearing the way to sign other players.
"We felt Steven was one of the top free-agent big men out there," said King. "He is an extremely important addition to our team. He is young, athletic and a natural shot-blocker, This move really strengthens our front court."
The 23-year-old Hunter played in career-high 76 games with Phoenix last season and netted 4.6 points per game to go along with 3.0 rpg. He appeared in all 15 playoff games off the bench for the Suns and averaged 4.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.20 blocks per contest.
In four NBA seasons, the 23-year-old Hunter has posted 3.9 ppg and 2.7 rpg in 221 career games with Orlando and the Suns.
