Sixers release veteran guard McKie

08.12.2005

Philadelphia, PA (Basketball News) - The Philadelphia 76ers released veteran guard Aaron McKie on Friday, club president Billy King announced. The team also stated that McKie will be designated as the team’s amnesty player.

McKie, who spent seven-plus seasons with the 76ers, was acquired by Philadelphia during the 1997 campaign from Detroit along with Theo Ratliff in exchange for Eric Montross and Jerry Stackhouse.

An 11-year NBA veteran, McKie ranks 30th all-time among the club’s leading scorers. When the Sixers reached the NBA Finals during the 2000-01 season for the first time in 18 years, McKie enjoyed as stellar season, netting 11.6 points per game, 5.0 assists and 4.1 rebounds per contest. His season was capped off when he was named the 2001 NBA Sixth Man of the Year.

However, the Temple product has been slowed by various injuries the past several seasons and last year averaged career lows in points (2.2), rebounds (2.5) and assists (1.5) in 68 games.

In 768 career games, including 287 starts, McKie has netted 7.6 ppg, while hauling down 3.3 rpg and dishing out 2.7 assists with Portland, Detroit and the Sixers.

A native of Philadelphia, McKie is a product of Simon Gratz High School.
