Suns try to extend franchise-best winning streak vs. Wizards

12.22.2006

(Basketball News) - The scorching Phoenix Suns try to extend their franchise- best winning streak to 16 games when they welcome the Washington Wizards tonight to US Airways Center.

Phoenix was supposed to play the new-look Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night at the Pepsi Center. However, the game was postponed because of a blizzard. It was the first time the Nuggets have canceled a game since April 20, 1999, after the shootings at Columbine High School.

The Suns have scored over 100 points in 12 of the 15 contests during their winning streak. They have won seven at home and eight on the road during the streak.

Reigning MVP Steve Nash is averaging 19.3 points and a team and league-best 11.6 assists, while All-Star forward Shawn Marion leads the Suns in scoring (19.5 ppg) and rebounding (9.2 rpg).

Phoenix, which has won nine in a row on its homecourt, is 10-2 at home this season. The Suns are scheduled to host Jarrett Jack and the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday.

Washington wraps up a four-game road trip this evening. Antawn Jamison, Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler combined for 37 of Washington’s 44 third- quarter points, as the Wizards rallied for a 126-119 win over the Sacramento Kings on Thursday at ARCO Arena.

Jamison had 33 points, 13 rebounds and four steals, while Arenas tallied 30 points, eight boards and seven assists in the victory for the Wizards. Butler added 23 points and 10 rebounds for Washington, which has won seven of its last nine games overall and is 2-1 on its current road trip.

The Wizards are 4-9 on the road this season.

This is the first of two meetings between the Wizards and Phoenix this season. Washington is scheduled to host the Suns on January 23, 2007 at the Verizon Center.

Washington has lost 15 of its last 17 at Phoenix. The home team has won six of the last eight meetings in this series.
