Top-seeded Mavericks try to take 2-1 lead over Golden State

04.27.2007

(Basketball News) - The top-seeded Dallas Mavericks try to make it two straight wins against the eighth-seeded Golden State Warriors, as the teams continue their first-round playoff matchup tonight at ORACLE Arena.

This best-of-seven series is tied at a game apiece. Game 4 is scheduled for Sunday at ORACLE Arena.

In Game 1, Baron Davis poured in 33 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and dished out eight assists to lead the Warriors to a stunning 97-85 win over the Mavericks on Sunday at the American Airlines Center. Stephen Jackson scored 23 points for the Warriors, while Jason Richardson added 13 points in the victory.

Golden State earned its first playoff victory since April 25, 1992, when it defeated the Seattle SuperSonics, 115-101. The Warriors also won their first playoff game on the road since defeating the Lakers in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals on May 8, 1991.

On Wednesday, Jason Terry scored 28 points as the Mavericks bounced back for a 112-99 victory over Golden State in front of their home crowd in Game 2 of the series. MVP candidate Dirk Nowitzki netted 23 and grabbed seven rebounds for the Mavericks, while Josh Howard posted 22 points and 11 boards in the win.

The Mavericks, who have lost three straight road games in the playoffs, have won four of their last five Games 3s in the postseason, while Golden State has dropped three straight Game 3s.

Dallas lost in six games to the Miami Heat in the championship round last year. The Mavericks reached the 60-win mark for the third time in franchise history during the 2006-07 regular season, as they won a franchise-best 67 games.

The last time the Mavericks lost in the first round of the playoffs was in 2004, when they were ousted in five games, 4-1, by the Sacramento Kings.

Golden State, which had the longest playoff drought in the NBA, returned to the postseason for the first time since 1994, when it was led by Chris Mullin, Latrell Sprewell and Chris Webber. The Warriors were swept, 3-0, by the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the playoffs.

Dallas and Golden State are meeting in the playoffs for the first time.
