Utah is getting comfortable at the top of the division

01.9.2007

(Basketball News) - The Utah Jazz (24-10) own a comfortable six-game lead over the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves in the Northwest Division. Utah is trying to make it back to the playoffs for the first time since the 2002-03 campaign.

The Dallas Mavericks conclude a three-game road trip on Tuesday, as they visit the surprising Jazz at EnergySolutions Arena. It is the second meeting of the season between the Mavericks and Utah. On December 11th, Jerry Sloan reached one of the NBA’s most significant coaching milestones, becoming the fifth head coach in league history to achieve 1,000 career wins after his Jazz topped Dallas, 101-79, at EnergySolutions Arena. Boozer posted 31 points and 11 rebounds in that victory for the Jazz.

Dallas has lost two of its last three at Utah.

Utah attempts to win back-to-back games this evening. Deron Williams scored a career-high tying 28 points and dished out 12 assists, as the Northwest Division-leading Jazz topped the Denver Nuggets, 96-84, on Saturday at the Pepsi Center.

Carlos Boozer posted 24 points and 11 rebounds in the win over Denver for the Jazz, who have won three of their last four contests overall. Mehmet Okur and Derek Fisher both netted 10 in the victory.

The Jazz are an impressive 14-2 at home this season. They will visit the Seattle SuperSonics on Friday before returning home to host the Miami Heat on Saturday.

Williams, who is playing in just his second season in the league, is averaging 16.9 points and a team-best 8.8 assists per game this season. He has scored in double-digits in 30 of 34 games this season and has registered nine double- doubles.

Utah is 20-2 when it scores 100 or more points this season. The Jazz have not reached the century mark in their last five contests.
