Utah makes qualifying offer to Giricek, Arroyo; two others

06.30.2004

Salt Lake City, UT (Basketball News) - The Utah Jazz made qualifying offers to Gordan Giricek, Carlos Arroyo, Jarron Collins and Maurice Williams for the 2004-05 season.

Giricek, from Croatia, averaged 11.3 points in 73 games this past season with Utah and Orlando. The guard started 18 of 25 games with the Jazz after being traded by the Magic for DeShawn Stevenson and a future second-round draft pick on February 19. With the Jazz, he averaged 13.5 points per game.

Arroyo, a three-year veteran, averaged 12.6 points and 5.0 assists in 71 contests last year, which was his first full season as a starting point guard.

Collins and Williams were used mostly in reserve roles. Collins, a center had 6.0 points and 3.9 rebounds per contest, while Williams, a guard, averaged five points per game off the bench.

"All four of these players made an important contribution to the team last year," said Kevin O’Connor, Utah’s senior VP of basketball operations. "We want them back next year and these qualifying offers show our intent to make that happen."

Under the terms of the NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Jazz were required to make the qualifying offer by June 30 in order to establish the team’s right to match any offer a player might receive.
