"Darrell knows how to win and he knows how to prepare this team to play at a championship level," said Hornets head coach Byron Scott. "He was known for unselfish team play and stellar defense during his playing days and he has been able to transfer those attributes to his teams as a coach."
Walker posted a record of 30-52 as head coach of the Toronto Raptors during the 1996-97 season. He resigned the following season with an overall record of 41-90.
He was named interim head coach of the Wizards on January 29, 2000 and guided Washington to a 15-23 record to finish the season. Walker took over as the Wizards director of player personnel in May of 2000.
He was head scout and special assistant for Washington in 2001-02 and a scout the last two seasons.
Walker averaged 8.9 points, 4.6 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 1.51 steals in 720 NBA games with New York, Denver, Washington, Detroit and Chicago.
