Warriors deal Van Exel to Portland

The 32-year-old Van Exel played just one season for Golden State, which obtained him last August as part of a nine-player deal. He averaged 12.6 points and 5.3 assists over 39 games in 2003-04 and was part of a 37-45 Warriors campaign that missed the playoffs.

Van Exel became expendable when the Warriors signed Derek Fisher earlier this month.

"We are happy to acquire two players who fit into our team as presently constructed," said Golden State Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Mullin.

Davis is a 13-year NBA veteran who spent the better part of his career helping the Indiana Pacers become one of the elite teams in the Eastern Conference. His best offensive season came in 1993-94 when he posted averages of 11.7 points and 10.9 rebounds per game.

For the last three campaigns, Davis has called Portland home. He was dealt to the Blazers on August 31, 2000 in exchange for forward Jermaine O’Neal and center Joe Kleine.

Over his career, Davis has an 8.7 scoring average to go along with 8.4 rebounds per contest in 959 games. He has appeared in five Eastern Conference Finals series and also competed in the NBA Finals during his final season with the Pacers. The Lakers beat Indiana that spring for their first of three straight titles.

The 6-foot Dickau has been in the league for two seasons, one with the Atlanta Hawks and one with Portland. Dickau, who played his college ball at Gonzaga, was traded to the Blazers this past February with Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Theo Ratliff for Rasheed Wallace and Wesley Person. Through his brief pro career, Dickau has averaged just three points in 8.7 minutes per game.

"There is always a need for young players such as Dan Dickau, who can shoot, run a team and fulfill a role," Mullin added.

Van Exel played in parts of four seasons with the Denver Nuggets and was traded to perennial playoff member Dallas in another big trade at the deadline on February 21, 2002. He then played the entire 2002-03 season with Dallas, where he averaged 12.5 points and 4.3 assists per game.

Originally selected by the Lakers in the second round of the 1993 NBA Draft, Van Exel made up one half of the LA backcourt for five years. However, the University of Cincinnati product did not fit into the Lakers long-term plans when Kobe Bryant burst onto the scene and was eventually dealt to the Nuggets following the 1997-98 season.
