Rookie Jarvis Hayes added 19 points and eight boards, and Etan Thomas had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Wizards, who overcame a turnover-filled fourth quarter
Washington committed 11 fourth-quarter turnovers, allowing the Hornets to get back into the contest. The Wizards also scored a season-low 10 fourth-quarter points.
In overtime, Arenas gave Washington the lead for good with a three-pointer at the 2:01 mark, 105-102. Kwame Brown then blocked a P.J. Brown shot with 1:14 left and followed that with a layup on the other end 22 seconds later that made it 107-102.
Kwame Brown finished with only six points.
Washington, who will host the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday, won for just the third time in its last eight at home and improved to 13-17 in its gym this season.
The Wizards have won two of three from the Raptors this season and have won five of eight and 10 of the last 15 meetings. Washington, though, has dropped four of its last six at home to Toronto.
