(Basketball News) - Antawn Jamison scored 27 points to lead Washington to a 97-86 win over New Jersey at Continental Airlines Arena.
Larry Hughes contributed 22 points for the Wizards, who snapped an eight-game losing streak in New Jersey and notched their second straight victory overall. Hughes also recorded five steals and leads the NBA with 29, despite missing the season opener.
Down 69-67, Washington rallied early in the fourth quarter. Two foul shots by Juan Dixon put the Wizards ahead 76-73, but Travis Best answered with a pair from the line to get New Jersey within 76-75. After a Gilbert Arenas free throw, Jamison’s jumper made it 79-75 with 7:11 to go.
After a basket by Mourning pulled New Jersey within 79-77, the Wizards scored eight of the next 10 points to take command. Hughes scored the final six, capped by a layup off a steal with 4:51 to go, that put them ahead 87-79.
New Jersey cut its deficit to 88-83 on a short jumper by Mourning with 2:38 to go, but got no closer.
On the injury front guard Steve Blake returned from the injured list, but played just three minutes and missed his only shot. Also Samaki Walker missed the game with a sore back.
Washington returns to action on Tuesday against the Toronto Raptors.
