Williams leads Jazz past Sonics

11.18.2006

Seattle, WA (Basketball News) - Deron Williams posted 27 points and eight assists, as the red-hot Utah Jazz downed the Seattle SuperSonics, 118-109, in a battle of Northwest Division rivals at KeyArena.

Matt Harpring scored 21 points for the Jazz, who are on a four-game winning streak. Mehmet Okur posted 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Carlos Boozer added 14 points and 13 boards. Ronnie Brewer and Paul Millsap contributed 11 points apiece.

Utah is a league-best 8-1 for the second-best start in franchise history, behind only a 9-1 start to the 1999 season.

"We have to stay healthy," Harpring said. "The last few years, injuries have hit us hard. We also have to continue to play hard and together."

Ray Allen scored 32 points for the SuperSonics, who lost their second straight. Rashard Lewis scored 24 points and Luke Ridnour added 15.

Utah gained an early advantage and led 28-23 heading into the second quarter, in which both squads scored 24 points for a 52-47 halftime Jazz advantage.

Both teams scored 30 in the third for an 82-77 Utah lead heading into the fourth.

The Jazz went on a 7-0 spurt midway through the fourth capped by a Derek Fisher layup for a 97-85 lead with 6:26 remaining. They outscored Seattle by four in the period to preserve the win.

"Our young guys have to play well," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "I don’t have the patience to keep telling them the same thing over and over. So far, they are responding and it has helped us."

Utah outrebounded Seattle 47-27. Seattle committed 20 turnovers, and finished 29-for-36 from the free-throw line.
