Caron Butler, who has just arrived, netted 16 points and dished out eight assists for the Wizards, who snapped a two-game skid. Andray Blatche had a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards in the win.
Washington finished 40 percent from the field.
Kyle Korver led the 76ers with 18 points off the bench, while Andre Iguodala scored 14 points, handed out 13 helpers and grabbed eight rebounds. Andre Miller and Rodney Carney each contributed 13 points and Samuel Dalembert donated 11 points with 17 rebounds as Philadelphia dropped its third straight contest.
A Carney layup late in the first quarter put the Sixers up by four, but Blatche’s jumper and a free throw by Arenas cut Washington’s deficit to 23-22.
The game went back-and-forth in the second with Philadelphia taking a 45-44 lead into the break following Miller’s jump shot.
The Wizards scored eight of the first 10 points in the third for a five-point edge. Things continued to stay close while Jarvis Hayes’s layup and Donnell Taylor’s jumper gave Washington a 65-62 lead entering the fourth.
That sparked an 8-2 spurt — capped by a pair of jumpers from Calvin Booth — as the Wizards went up 73-64 with 9 1/2 minutes to play. The Sixers answered with the next four points to cut within five, however, Washington went on an 11-4 run for an 84-72 edge.
Korver, though, capped a 13-4 burst with a trey as Philadelphia got as close as three, 88-85, with 1:35 left, but the Wizards converted four free throws to account for the final margin of victory.
