Songaila, who signed as a free agent with Washington in the offseason, originally suffered the injury in the World Championships playing for the Lithuanian national team this summer.
"I am very disappointed that I will not be out there with my new teammates," said Songaila. "I plan to work hard and look forward to getting back on the court. Unfortunately, surgery is my best option at this time."
The 6-9, 240-pound Songaila averaged a career-high 9.2 points per game last season for Chicago in 62 contests. He also pulled down an average of four rebounds, and helped the Bulls hold opponents to 42.6 percent from the floor, an NBA best.
The Wake Forest product spent his first two seasons in the NBA in Sacramento, averaging 6.1 points and 3.7 rebounds.
In his three-year career, the Marijampole, Lithuania native posted averages of 7.0 points and 3.8 boards while shooting 50 percent from the field.
