Orlando dominates Miami

12.30.2006

Orlando, FL (Basketball News) - Dwight Howard scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as Orlando trounced a short-handed Miami team, 97-68, at Amway Arena.

Trevor Ariza added 16 points and 10 boards off the bench for the Magic, who snapped a four-game skid. Tony Battie chipped in with 12 points for Orlando.

Jason Kapono led the offensively challenged Heat with 15 points. The team was playing its second consecutive game without All-Star guard Dwyane Wade. Wade sprained his right wrist against Chicago on Wednesday.

Dorell Wright was the only other Miami player in double figures with 12 points, as the Heat dropped their third straight game.

The teams were deadlocked at 27 after the opening 12 minutes but Orlando used a stifling defense in the second quarter to take control of the contest. The Magic allowed Miami to score just 10 points in the frame and used a 12-0 run, highlighted by a pair of Howard hook shots, to build a 44-31 edge with just over three minutes left until intermission.

The Magic finished the half with an 11-point cushion, 48-37.

Orlando continued to pull away in the third quarter and held a commanding 74-57 lead entering the final frame.

Miami had no answer in the fourth as the Magic kept piling it on. Battie’s turnaround jumper, with 7:45 left, gave Orlando a 21-point lead, 80-59.

About 4 1/2 minutes later, J.J. Redick’s three ignited the crowd and gave the Magic an 87-61 edge.

Orlando then cruised to the finish line from there.
