(Basketball News) - Damon Stoudamire finished with 23 points and seven assists to lead the Portland Trail Blazers to an 85-78 win over the Houston Rockets on Friday at the Rose Garden.
Zach Randolph added 21 points and eight rebounds for Portland, which had dropped two of its last three. Rasheed Wallace chipped in with 14 points in the win as the Trail Blazers won their seventh straight over the Rockets.
Houston came into the fourth quarter trailing by seven, but pulled within three at 71-68 on a dunk by Yao — his only basket of the final period — with 5:45 left in the contest.
After the two teams traded jumpers to keep the margin at three, Maurice Taylor hit a 16-footer from the right wing to pull the Rockets within 73-72.
Stoudamire, though, started a 10-2 Portland burst with a three-pointer and Jeff McInnis finished the spurt with a big three-pointer and 12-foot jumper to make it 83-74 with a minute left to play.
Portland emerged victorious despite shooting just 34 percent from the floor. They did, however, attempt 28 free throws — hitting 23 — while the Rockets got to the line just 17 times — making 12.
The Blazers are off until Sunday when they visit the Golden State Warriors.
