Raptors, Wizards square off in D.C.

03.6.2007

(Basketball News) - A battle of division leaders takes place tonight, as the Washington Wizards host the Toronto Raptors at the Verizon Center.

The Southeast Division-leading Wizards will wrap up a four-game homestand and are 2-1 so far on the stand. On Sunday they posted a 107-106 win over the Golden State Warriors in odd fashion.

Gilbert Arenas buried three foul shots with just one-tenth of a second on the clock to lift Washington to its second straight win after a four-game losing streak. Arenas was fouled on his way to the basket and was given an extra free throw after Warriors head coach Don Nelson was issued a technical foul for arguing.

Arenas ended with 32 points and Antawn Jamison added 18 points and 11 rebounds in his second game back from injury for the Wizards, who improved to 23-8 at the Verizon Center this season. Washington is 3 1/2 games ahead of Miami in the Southeast standings and third overall in the Eastern Conference.

In injury news, Wizards center Brendan Haywood (back spasms) is questionable for Tuesday’s game.

Meanwhile, the Raptors have dropped two in a row and will close out a brief two-game road trip this evening in Washington. Toronto suffered a 120-97 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday at Quicken Loans Arena.

Chris Bosh scored 25 points for the Atlantic Division-leading Raptors, who have dropped three of their last four games. Juan Dixon scored 24 points in the loss for Toronto, which is 12-19 on the road this season.

The Raptors are four games ahead of New Jersey in the Atlantic standings and fourth overall in the East. On the injury front, Raptors rookie forward Andrea Bargnani (personal) is questionable for Tuesday’s game. Bargnani did not play against the Cavaliers.

Tuesday’s showdown between Toronto and Washington is the third of four meetings this season. Toronto is 2-0 so far in the series, while both teams will meet again on March 30 at the Verizon Center.

The Raptors have won three straight against Washington, but are winless over their last five trips to D.C.
