(Basketball News) - San Antonio lost on Monday when Lorenzen Wright hit the winning basket with 17 seconds left to lift the Memphis Grizzlies to an 81-80 win over the Tim Duncan-less Spurs at SBC Center.
Hedo Turkoglu led San Antonio with 19 points. Rasho Nesterovic scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half and added 10 rebounds for the Spurs, who are 1-1 without the injured Duncan.
With the Spurs leading 71-57 early in the fourth following a Manu Ginobili three-pointer, the Grizzlies answered with a 19-3 run to take the lead, 76-74. Watson, who scored seven points during the burst, capped the run with a trey with 5:13 left to give Memphis its first lead of the game.
The Grizzlies continued to hold the lead until Bo Outlaw fouled Malik Rose with 1:08 remaining. Rose responded by hitting both of his free throws to give the Spurs an 80-79 edge.
Shane Battier then missed a baseline jumper with 54 seconds left, but after the Spurs turned it over on a shot clock violation, Wright put back his own miss with 19 seconds left to put Memphis on top for good, 81-80.
San Antonio had a chance for the win, but Rose’s driving attempt with two seconds left went off the rim and Memphis corralled the board for the win.
The Spurs are off until Wednesday when they host the Seattle SuperSonics. San Antonio is 2-0 against the Sonics this season with both wins coming at KeyArena.
Turkoglu has scored in double digits in five straight games. He is averaging 15.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists in that span.
