Minnesota trails the Los Angeles Clippers by 3 1/2 games for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Western Conference, while Seattle is 6 1/2 games off the pace.
The Timberwolves play the finale of a short two-game homestand. Kevin Garnett’s fade away jumper as time expired pushed Minnesota over the Portland Trail Blazers, 94-93, on Sunday at the Target Center.
Garnett poured in 22 points and pulled down nine rebounds for Minnesota, which won for just the second time in its last six games overall. Rookie Randy Foye poured in 17 points, while Ricky Davis scored 15 points and dished out eight assists in the win for the Timberwolves.
Minnesota is 20-13 at home this season. The Timberwolves are scheduled to visit Carlos Boozer and the Utah Jazz on Wednesday at EnergySolutions Arena.
Seattle plays the first of a two-game road trip. Manu Ginobili scored 19 points and was one of seven Spurs in double figures as the San Antonio Spurs crushed the SuperSonics, 120-79, on Sunday at KeyArena.
Luke Ridnour ended with 16 points for the SuperSonics, who have dropped seven of their last nine games overall. Chris Wilcox had 14 points and grabbed nine boards, while Rashard Lewis netted 13 in defeat.
Prior to Sunday’s game, it was announced that All-Star guard Ray Allen will miss the remainder of the season with bone spurs in his left ankle. Allen, who is averaging a team-best 26.4 points per game, will require surgery but a specific date has yet to be determined.
The SuperSonics are 8-25 on the road this season. They will visit Allen Iverson and the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday at the Pepsi Center.
This is the fourth and final meeting of the season between the clubs. Seattle has won two of the three contests so far.
Seattle has lost three straight after winning its last two at Minnesota.
