The Spurs bought out the remainder of the guard’s contract Friday after it was determined that his current left knee condition prevents him from competing at his full potential.
Carter, who averaged 4.4 points and 17.4 minutes in five games for the Spurs this season, will now become a free agent.
"We all worked together to come up with this agreement," Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said. "[Carter] worked hard and did everything that we asked of him during his time in San Antonio. But due to the condition of his knee, it was better for everyone involved to make this move at this time."
Carter signed with the team in the offseason after spending the first four years of his career with Miami. He missed 13 games this season while on the injured list.
