The star players for both teams accumulated three fouls in the first half. Tim Duncan had eight points for the Spurs, while LeBron James tallied a team-best nine for the Cavs, but both went to the bench midway through the second after being charged a third foul.
The Cavs, who hosted an NBA Finals game for the first time in their 37-year history, elected to go with Gibson as their starting point guard. Larry Hughes was inactive for the contest due to a left foot injury.
The Spurs, who led by as many as 29 points before holding on for a 103-92 win Sunday night, lead the best-of-seven series 2-0 and are trying for their fourth NBA title in the last nine seasons.
Bruce Bowen has nine points and Parker eight at the break for the Spurs.
Zydrunas Ilgauskas has eight points for the Cavaliers, who are trying to continue their success at home this postseason, as they are 7-1 at Quicken Loans Arena.
Damon Jones’ three-pointer moved the Cavs to a 26-19 lead three minutes into the second. However, James was hit with an offensive foul with 6:01 left, his third personal. He immediately left the game in favor of Drew Gooden, and at the time the Cavs were ahead 30-25.
Bowen then hit a three-pointer to get the Spurs within two, but Duncan fouled Ilgauskas on a made hook shot with 5:24 left for his third foul.
Gibson’s layup boosted the Cavs to a 38-30 lead with nearly three minutes left in the half, but they were held scoreless after that.
It was tight throughout the opening quarter. James’ layup moved the Cavs ahead 5-4, and the home team didn’t trail the rest of the period, holding an 18-16 edge after 12 minutes.
