"We are pleased to sign a veteran player like Mike who brings the ability to score, shoot from the perimeter and run our offense," Timberwolves vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale said. "He is a tough competitor who will be a welcome addition."
James enjoyed a career year last season, averaging 20.3 points and 5.8 assists for the Raptors. The five-year veteran has posted averages of 11.9 points and 4.1 assists for his career, which includes stops in Miami, Boston, Detroit, Milwaukee, Houston and Toronto.
James, who was undrafted out of college, is looking to settle in at the point for Minnesota, a position the team sorely needed to address this offseason. The Timberwolves acquired Villanova’s Randy Foye in a draft-day trade, who along with James, figures into the mix at the point with incumbents Troy Hudson and Marko Jaric.
