Warriors suspend Ellis 30 games over moped injury

10.11.2008 - Updated on 10.13.2008

"The Golden State Warriors suspended injured guard Monta Ellis for 30 games without pay Saturday for violating his lucrative new contract by getting into a moped accident.

Ellis, who agreed to a six-year deal worth $66 million in July, severely sprained his ankle in a low-speed crash in late August. The suspension will cost the guard slightly less than $3 million.

The Warriors counted four preseason games in the suspension’s length, which means Ellis can’t return to the club until after Golden State’s 26th regular-season game, against Indiana on Dec. 17.

Exactly 313 Joe D covers for Davidson, they essentially present a united front. Not here. Everyone already knew Nelson and Cohan had issues. This is just another disagreemnt they had. They needed to discuss privately and present a united front publicly. .

Sells aka Small World. It was going to be more, so even when he was healthy he’d wouldn’t play or get paid. But they decided Ellis and his agent, cooperated after he fessed up to get this cleared up so it’s only 30 games, wheather he’s able to be back by then or not. That’s why it took so long, they looked closely at the injury and the healing process, and this verict was deterimined. Putting a dent in his pocket was the cream of the crop for Cohen .

suspending a player for games he wouldn’t have been able to play in anyway is weak. just say you fined him and didn’t want to hurt your team’s chances any further. .

No ownership has unity in sports. Mr D in Detroit is a control freak, when he tells Joe do something, Joe jumps at it, it’s not open to discussion. Coaching for example, each time a coach was booted was Mr Davidisons decision, but Joe passes it off as this is how he felt as well, Only the Saunders one was somewhat his, but Mr D put pressure for changes. There is nothing wrong with a delay as long as a punishment is served. If they didn’t want to punish him fine, and the other side did, they finally met a common ground which was fair. Just like a players contract an agent may want $70 million, the team wants to give $50 million, they end up deciding $60 million is fair enough. Sometimes things take time, not everyone sees eye to eye from the get go, as long as something gets done by the start of the season is very reasonable .

It’s not asbsurd. Far from it. The delay shows that the organization is somewhat fractured which is the issue! Good teams have synergy between management, coaching staff and ownership! For example, Detroit, San Antonio, and most recently, Boston. Bad usually ones don’t have unity. .

To say it wasn’t handled quickly enough is absurd. They can take as long as they need to discuss how to handle the situation with Monta. Ownership always has different views than everyone else it’s in their rich controlling nature. As long as the end result had a fair punishment is doesn’t matter. This situation of course has no winners, well except for the 29 other teams .

I agree the punishment is fair, but it wasn’t handled quickly enough or totally correctly. They’ve known about his lie and injury for weeks and delayed giving a punishment. The delay was because coach Nelson and GM Mullin wanted no suspension, while ownership wanted to suspend or even void his contract. Unfortunately, this disagreement is public knowledge and again shows that Nelson, the high profile coach, and Cohan, the owner, aren’t always on the same page. Cohan has previously sued Nelson in the early 1990s and last year they squabbled over his contract extension and money. These sorts of issues are never good. Golden State could have a good season or tank out the gate. It will be interesting. They’re unpredictable. That said, I like Ellis and personally think he should have a chance to right the situation. Just thoughts … .

I agree his $11 million dollar yearly total minus $3 million is $8 million and like $6 million after taxes. He could make some or all of it up in endorsements. He’ll be bumed out to not play with his team. I also think this was good that the team made a statement, sucks for them, but this was handled correctly .

$3 mil out of $66 mil ain’t nothing, he can make that up in endorsements, after taxes on the whole contract is like $40 mil. I don’t think he’ll lose any sleep over this .
