"I am very pleased Lenny has agreed to join our group, and believe his addition will bring immeasurable value as well as regional credibility to our efforts to build a world-class arena in the Greater Seattle area and secure a bright future for our teams and business," said Clayton I. Bennett, chairman of the PBC.
Wilkens, who first came to Seattle in 1968 as a player and then led the franchise to its only championship in 1979 as a coach, will oversee external community relations and business activities as well as serve as an advisor to ownership on basketball operations.
With 32 years of head coaching experience in the NBA, Wilkens is the all-time winningest coach in league history with a career record of 1,315-1,133 with Seattle, Portland, Cleveland, Atlanta, Toronto and New York.
"I know the NBA and I know the community, and I’m really looking forward to this opportunity to assist the Sonics in any way I can," said Wilkens.
