Wizards wipe out Knicks

12.6.2006

New York, NY (Basketball News) - Gilbert Arenas ripped the Knicks for 38 points, and Antawn Jamison scored 33 and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Washington Wizards to a 113-102 win over New York that wasn’t nearly as close as the final score indicated.

Eddie Curry scored 22 and grabbed 11 boards for the Knicks, who have lost three of four. Quentin Richardson and Stephon Marbury netted 16 each for New York. David Lee scored 13 and pulled down eight rebounds in the losing effort.

Jamison added seven rebounds for the Wizards, who have won four of five. Deshawn Stevenson scored 15 points for Washington, and Caron Butler added 10 points on the night.

Washington took control with a scorching performance in the first half, hitting five-of-six from behind the three-point line in a second quarter in which they opened up an 11-point lead. Both teams had defensive issues in a first half which ended with Washington up 66-55.

Lee kept the Knicks in the game early, netting seven points in the first quarter as New York stayed within striking distance. Arenas was on point from the opening tip, though, scoring 12 in the first quarter, including a three- pointer with three seconds left to send the Wizards into the second quarter with a 35-31 lead.

Arenas didn’t slow up in the second quarter, hitting for 12 more, 24 points at the break.

"We made shots tonight," said Arenas, in reference to Washington’s 14-of-20 performance from behind the three-point line, a 70-percent clip. "Any team that shoots like that, even if you get outrebounded it’s still hard to beat them."

Washington led by as much as 21 in the third, as an Arenas three with 4:27 left in the quarter gave the Wizards a 92-71 advantage. The Knicks briefly cut into the lead, streaking on a 13-1 run that brought New York to within 93-84 on a Jamal Crawford lay-up with just under a minute left in the third.

Washington quickly answered, though, and led by double-figures for the rest of the game. Washington led by 21 with just over three minutes left, but the Knicks closed the fourth quarter with a meaningless 12-2 run to produce the final, 11-point margin of victory for the Wizards.

"We all definitely have a sense of urgency," said Richardson, as the Knicks’ eighth loss in 10 home games this season inspired a great deal of booing by the home crowd. "We all know that we have to start winning now, but we know that there’s still a lot of basketball to be played."
